Which companies are subject to VAT in Switzerland?
All companies that are either based in Switzerland or provide services in Switzerland and generate at least CHF 100,000 in annual sales from taxable and tax-exempt services in Switzerland and abroad are subject to mandatory VAT in Switzerland from 1 January 2018.
Who needs a fiscal representative in Switzerland?
Foreign companies must appoint a representative who has its registered office in Switzerland to fulfil their procedural obligations (Art. 67 para. 1 VAT Act). Appointing a representative does not establish a permanent establishment (Art. 67 para. 3 VAT Act).
How long does it take to register with the Swiss tax authorities?
Registration of the fiscal representation and VAT with the tax administration usually takes place within a few weeks.
What happens if I do not have a fiscal representative even though I am required to do so?
Without fiscal representation, you risk legal consequences and penalties because you do not fulfill your VAT obligations domestically.
